Jorge Amado (1912-2001) fue un destacado escritor brasileño, nacido en Bahía. Estudió Derecho en Río de Janeiro, pero se dedicó principalmente a la literatura y la política. Miembro del Partido Comunista Brasileño, fue elegido diputado y participó en la Asamblea Nacional Constituyente. Debido a su activismo político, sufrió exilios en Argentina, Uruguay, Francia y Checoslovaquia.

Su prolífica obra abarca novelas, relatos, memorias, biografías, teatro y literatura infantil. Entre sus títulos más destacados se encuentran "Gabriela, clavo y canela" (1958), "Doña Flor y sus dos maridos" (1966) y "Tienda de los milagros" (1969). A lo largo de su carrera, recibió reconocimientos como el Premio Jabuti y el Premio Luís de Camões.
