He later meets the famed courtesan Kamala in the city and plunges into a life of sensual pleasure and material pursuit, until all worldly joys turn to dust. Disgusted and empty, he abandons everything again and resolves to end his life. Nació en 1877 en Calw. Siguió profesiones tan dispares como la de religioso y la de mecánico, pero con la publicación de su primera novela, Peter Camenzind (1904) logró establecerse como escritor. Su obra literaria lo colocó entre los autores más importantes del siglo XX. Sus títulos más destacados son: Demian (1919), Siddhartha (1922), El lobo estepario (1927) y El juego de abalorios (1943). Entre muchas otras distinciones, recibió en 1946 el premio Nobel de Literatura. Murió en 1962, a los 85 años en Montagnola.
