The green horn kid, Abner Daniels, was left on his own, with just his wits and training, and a worn out horse. But his survival instinct was as strong as his head was stubborn. So he changed his direction from going west to New Mexico, where his family had been headed, to south to o a place that had intrigued him; Texas. After getting to Texas, the only job he could find was risking his life as a Texas Ranger. The Rangers was a relatively young organization, at the time, and appealed to the young who were seeking adventure. Ab found plenty of adventures in helping the Rangers tame Texas. It was said of the Rangers that, "they rode like Mexicans, tracked like Comanche, and fought like devils", this was the Texas Rangers, Ab not only fought for the Rangers, he started a family and a ranch in this unforgiving land and fought for a right to a life that was free from thieves and marauding Comanche.
