The United States Air Force (USAF), an organization that hires all of its uniformed leaders from within, is both small enough that those leaders are connected through interpersonal networks, and also large enough that great leaders within the service need to leverage these networks to staff their rosters. With senior leaders choosing their subordinates, and often their successors, their influence on Air Force policy long outlives their tours of duty. An investigation of the formative years of the Air Force from 1947-1961, and analysis of the relationships between senior leaders during this time, can illuminate these interpersonal networks. The background for this investigation will be a prosopography (collective biography) of the USAF Chiefs of Staff during this period. Examining these networks through a reliance on written correspondence and oral history, this paper will attempt to determine how these relationships shaped Air Force policy during this period of the USAF's "adolescence."This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
