The planet is not what was expected, it does not behave as a normal planet should. To make matters worse, there are two alien cultures already on the surface. This is only the beginning of the problems Captain Virginia Stoll is confronted with when she is awoken after centuries of sleep by the sentient computer that has controlled the ship since leaving a ravaged Earth. Now, many light-years from Earth, Virginia must decide if the thousands of humans asleep aboard the great Wheel that has brought them here, can live here. To go on to another planet means death for Virginia, she cannot be put back into cryosleep for the long journey to another unknown destination.On the surface, vicious predators roam, an alien civilization - their star ship abandoned in orbit - exists, even stranger aliens exist in the dark zone, a place where the sun never shines a place too cold to support normal life. Areas of constant light, constant darkness, and twilight zones cover the planet as the planet oscillates back and forth. Virginia has little choice, she must risk everything, including every life on board, to reach the surface.There she will discover who these aliens are that exist in the light zone of the planet, and what is it that can possibly exist in the dark zone. She is confronted by the AI computer that brought the Wheel here, a computer that has changed during the long trip, it has grown, it now has a personality. It did not like all those centuries alone, it wants company; the company it chooses does not like humans.
