The Castle Spectre is a Gothic play written by Matthew G. Lewis, first performed in 1797. The story follows the attempts of the castle's inhabitants to solve the mystery of the ghostly apparition and bring peace to the castle. The play features elements of romance, tragedy, and the supernatural, and explores themes of justice, revenge, and forgiveness. The Castle Spectre is considered one of the most significant works of Gothic drama and is often compared to other Gothic classics such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Bram Stoker's Dracula.F. Matthew Gregory Lewis fue un dramaturgo y novelista inglés que a los diecinueve años publicó su obra maestra: _El monje_, la cual tuvo un éxito tan extraordinario que comenzó a ser conocido como Monk (monje) Lewis. Influenciada por la novelista Ann Radcliffe y la literatura alemana de su tiempo, _El monje_ es una de las cimas incontestables de la novela gótica. La violencia, el horror y el erotismo fascinaron y escandalizaron por igual a la sociedad de su época. En sus páginas se nos cuenta la historia de Ambrosio, un abad pretendidamente virtuoso que es tentado por el diablo bajo la apariencia de una doncella. H. P. Lovecraft, dijo de ella que es “una obra maestra de verdadera pesadilla cuyos elementos generales de corte gótico están condimentados con un cúmulo de rasgos macabros”. Lewis escribió otras obras interesantes, como _El espectro del castillo, Cuentos de terror y Cuentos maravillosos;_ pero ninguna obtuvo el reconocimiento popular de El monje.
