MARY NORTON (1903-1992) vivió en Inglaterra, donde trabajó como actriz, guionista y escritora galardonada con numerosos premios. De pequeña, creó un mundo imaginario en el que unos seres diminutos habitaban los matorrales cercanos a las casas de los humanos para desconocimiento de estos. Es de esta fantasía personal de la que proceden sus libros más conocidos, los que tratan de los Borrowers. Pero antes de The Borrowers, escribió dos enormes relatos que gozaron de mucha popularidad: El boliche mágico y Hogueras y escobas, que posteriormente fueron combinados en este único libro.
