While humanists have pondered the subject of love to the point of obsessiveness, philosophers have steadfastly ignored it. One might wonder whether the discipline of philosophy even recognizes love. The word philosophy means “love of wisdom,” but the absence of love from philosophical discourse is curiously glaring. So where did the love go? In The Erotic Phenomenon, Jean-Luc Marion asks this fundamental question of philosophy, while reviving inquiry into the concept of love itself.Marion begins his profound and personal book with a critique of Descartes’ equation of the ego’s ability to doubt with the certainty that one exists—“I think, therefore I am”—arguing that this is worse than vain. Jean-Luc Marion nació en Meudon (Francia) en 1946. Ha sido profesor de filosofía en la Universidad de Poitiers, en Paris X - Nanterre y luego en La Sorbona, en la cátedra de filosofía ocupada anteriormente por Emmanuel Levinas. También ha enseñado en la Universidad de Chicago, donde sucedió a Paul Ricoeur. Entre las distinciones que ha recibido figuran diversos doctorados honoris causa. Desde 2008 es miembro de la Academia francesa. Entre sus numerosas publicaciones cabe destacar en castellano: Prolegómenos a la caridad (1993), El cruce de lo visible (2006), Siendo dado. Ensayo para una fenomenología de la donación (2008), Dios sin el ser (2010), y A decir verdad (2022).
