Émile Erckmann (nombre completo Émile Erckmann), nacido en 1822 en Phalsbourg, fue un novelista francés conocido por su colaboración literaria con Alexandre Chatrian bajo la firma conjunta Erckmann-Chatrian. Juntos se convirtieron en referentes del relato fantástico y del folclore alsaciano-lorenés, cultivando un estilo que mezcla misterio, superstición rural y comentarios sociales. La dupla destacó en pleno siglo XIX por su capacidad para construir atmósferas inquietantes sin recurrir al exceso, apoyándose en el detalle realista y en personajes profundamente humanos.

Dentro de su obra conjunta figura “Hugues-le-Loup”, publicado originalmente en francés y traducido al español como Hugo el lobo y otros relatos de terror, texto cuyo estilo y temática coinciden con la estética sombría característica del dúo. Además de su producción fantástica, Erckmann trabajó narrativa histórica y política, lo que amplió el impacto cultural de su obra más allá del género. Alexandre Chatrian (nombre completo Alexandre Chatrian), nacido en 1826 en Soldatenthal, fue un escritor francés cuya trayectoria quedó indisolublemente ligada a la de Émile Erckmann. Juntos firmaron como Erckmann-Chatrian, convirtiéndose en una de las duplas literarias más reconocibles del siglo XIX. Su colaboración mezclaba imaginación popular, mirada crítica hacia la sociedad francesa y un gusto particular por lo inquietante, lo fantástico y las tradiciones rurales de Alsacia y Lorena.

Entre los relatos más representativos de esta autoría conjunta se encuentra “Hugues-le-Loup”, difundido en español como Hugo el lobo y otros relatos de terror, cuya atmósfera sombría y enfoque psicológico reflejan el sello narrativo del dúo. Chatrian aportó sensibilidad política y un agudo sentido del carácter humano, lo que enriqueció tanto sus obras fantásticas como las históricas.
