THE LAST ENEMY is a story told through the eyes of Jack Rainie, a boy of ten, abandoned in a failed frontier colony settlement in 1843. He is captured by Comanche Indians and survives as a slave/captive for six years, stubbornly clinging to memories of his past. He endures, adapts and escapes, but not without a bitter price that results in a blood debt of tribal retribution and the death of his only friend among the Comanches. The story of Jack's hardships and ordeals as he struggles with his conflict between his "Indian thinking" and his hatred for any kind of slavery, and his efforts to assimilate into the White Dog world, unfolds against an historically accurate backdrop of Native American tribal slavery practices and showcases the hardships and brutality of life in a frontier settlement. He wanders through his maturing years with Dr. Cicero Smith, a wise and flamboyant mentor to Jack, whose hunger for adventure takes them to California after the Gold Rush, then back to Texas again and into the Civil War years as they were experienced in the remote frontier
