This edition of the of "The Last Filibusters" is the only English translation of the Italian "Gli ultimi filibustieri" by Emilio Salgari, an Italian writer of adventure and science fiction stories for readers of all ages young at heart. His books are regarded as classics and are still in print many years after their initial publication. They have been translated in several languages and, besides Italy, they are especially popular in the Spanish speaking world. A prolific writer, Salgari authored 80 novels and about 150 short stories. In this, the continuation and conclusions of the adventures of Enrico of Ventimiglia, the Italian gentleman disguised as a corsair, the faithful Mendoza, Buttafuoco, and the boisterous Don Barrejo reunite to save Neala, Enrico's half-sister found her and brought her back to Europe in "The Son of The Red Corsair." Neala has returned to the New World to be made Queen of Darien and take possession of the riches she inherited after the death of her grandfather, the Darien's Gran Cacique. But the Marquis of Montelimar, who had kept her prisoner pretending to be her tutor with the aim of getting his hands on the inheritance, kidnaps her soon after she arrives. Escritor italiano, Emilio Salgari nació en Verona, Italia, el 21 de agosto de 1862, y falleció en Turín, Italia, el 25 de abril de 1911. Hijo de una familia de comerciantes, de joven sirvió a bordo de un barco que recorrió la costa Adriática y Mediterránea, pero no hay pruebas de que hiciera más viajes por mar, aunque aseguraba que los lugares exóticos que aparecían en sus libros se basaban en sitios que había visitado personalmente.

Salgari comenzó a prepararse en el Real Instituto Técnico Naval P. Sarpi de Venecia, pero no llegó a obtener el título de capitán que ansiaba. Sus novelas, llenas de acción, fueron muchas, pero probablemente sea conocido sobre todo por crear el personaje de Sandokán.

A pesar de su éxito, Salgari fue uno de los autores más vendidos de su generaciónl, vivió en una relativa miseria que, junto con el desequilibio mental de su esposa, la actriz de teatro Ida Peruzzi, con quien tuvo cuatro hijos, lo condujo a suicidarse en 1911 realizando el rito tradicional del Hara-kiri.

Salgari escribió en total ochenta y cuatro novelas e incontables relatos, destacando títulos como Los tigres de Mompracen o Los piratas de Malasia. Varios de sus libros han sido llevados al cine y su personaje principal, Sandokan, ha protagonizado una serie de televisión.
