Leaf and Leila are fraternal twins born in 1964 to a hippie couple. It’s a time of euphoric enthusiasm for Eastern religions. Their parents, who are taking classes in a version of tantra yoga, enroll them in the kid’s class right after their twelfth birthday. Although there isn’t the briefest whiff of sexuality in these classes, they are unusually enthusiastic about their practice, and it becomes the centerpiece of their lives. But then, on a cold winter’s night, they take the first step toward expressing their growing attraction to each other. By the time they’re fourteen, the twins liken themselves to Shiva and Shakti and infer from tantric teachings that their own relationship is divine. At this point they become aware that a physical union might play a part in their quest for Divine Union. However, the path to that mystical experience turns out to be rockier and more complicated than originally anticipated. The danger of incest—whether real or imagined—raises obstacles, especially with their parents. Leaf becomes discouraged, but not Leila. Guided by her uncanny sense of intuition she eventually leads the two of them to what she has always envisioned as being their ultimate destiny.
