(Rhode Island, 1933 - 2023 Nuevo México) pasó gran parte de su infancia en Knoxville, Tennessee, donde tendrán lugar sus primeras cuatro novelas. Ya en 1965 comenzó a llamar la atención de la crítica internacional con El Guardían del Vergel por el que ganó el premio Faulker.

Ganó el Premio Pulitzer de ficción por La carretera y del National Book Award por Todos los hermosos caballos. Es considerado como uno de los cuatro mayores novelistas estadounidenses de su tiempo. Su prosa densa se encasilla dentro del género gótico sureño por su complejidad estilística y la oscuridad y violencia que presenta.
