Christopher John Offutt pasó su infancia y primera juventud en Haldeman, Kentucky, una población minera de doscientos habitantes que ya no existe. Tras licenciarse en la Universidad de Morehead, recorrió los Estados Unidos a dedo y trabajó en más de cincuenta empleos. Alumno de James Salter y Frank Conroy en el curso de escritura creativa de la Universidad de Iowa, Chris Offutt debutó en 1992 con el libro de relatos Kentucky seco. Es, además, autor de otras dos colecciones de relatos, tres obras autobiográficas y seis novelas. Ha escrito guiones de las series Treme, True Blood y Weeds.
