Basing his view on the object relations theories of the "British School" of psychoanalysis, Christopher Bollas examines the human subject's memories of its earliest experiences (during infancy and childhood) of the object, whether it be mother, father, or self. He explains in well-written and non-technical language how the object can affect the child, or "cast in shadow," without the child being able to process this relation through mental representations of language.

Christopher Bollas, nacido en 1943 en Washington D.C., es un reconocido psicoanalista y escritor británico de origen estadounidense. Se graduó en Historia por la Universidad de California, Berkeley, y obtuvo un doctorado en Literatura Inglesa en la Universidad de Buffalo. Su formación psicoanalítica la realizó en la Clínica Tavistock y en la Sociedad Psicoanalítica Británica, donde fue influenciado por figuras como Paula Heimann y Marion Milner.

Entre sus obras más destacadas se encuentran "La sombra del objeto" (1987), "Ser un personaje" (1992) y "El momento freudiano" (2007). Estos trabajos, pertenecientes al género psicoanalítico, han contribuido significativamente a la teoría y práctica contemporánea del psicoanálisis.
