Frank's life is revealed as a series of wanderings, a long adventurous journey that commences in the mid 1930s. War and post-war circumstances intensify his ups and downs, the latter being set mainly in Brazil; earlier chapters also have a backdrop of the Americas: the Cayman Islands, Honduras and the United States.
