Although the state's role in society has clearly expanded since the 1930s, its independent effect on social structure and change has been given little weight in modern political theories. To bring theory more into line with reality, Stepan proposes a new model of state autonomy which he shows to be particularly well suited for understanding political developments in the Iberian countries and their former Latin-American colonies. Originally published in 1978. Alfred C. Stepan (1936–2017) fue un destacado politólogo estadounidense, reconocido por sus aportes al estudio de la democracia, el autoritarismo y las transiciones políticas. Fue profesor en la Universidad de Columbia y en la Universidad de Yale, además de ocupar cargos académicos en Harvard. Su trabajo se centró especialmente en América Latina, Europa del Este y el mundo islámico. Stepan es conocido por conceptos clave como el de “democracias consolidadas” y por sus análisis sobre las relaciones entre religión y política en los sistemas democráticos.
