Captain Henry Samuel O'Brien was a Texas ranger beginning in the early years of the Republic of Texas. During his long and illustrious career, he confronted many dangers, from outlaws, hostile Indians, organized attacks from an army seeking to revoke Texas' independence, from Yankee soldiers, and from wild animals of all kinds. He is a tough, no-nonsense sort of man, dedicated to his work of keeping his home safe from all dangers.
The story involves a young reporter named Tommy Bradshaw who is assigned to interview the old retired Ranger, now living on his small ranch, and to write a series of articles about him. Hank - as Captain O'Brien is known by his friends - tells the reporter his story without embellishment, in the dialect of the time and place.
