College freshman Taylor Pents is good at many things. He is organized, on time, deliberately sober, and feels more passionately about chemistry and calculus than any other eighteen-year-old he knows. As equipped as he is to handle the rigors of academia, in matters of life, love, and death he is as ill-prepared as anyone else. In this story Taylor describes his first year at the University of Florida. Alongside two flamboyant new friends, Taylor stumbles into a life of college subcultures and of homophobic and grungy roommates. He struggles to overcome self-abuse and the consequences of falling in love for the first time. He learns about pregnancies wanted and unwanted, as well as adversity and relief as a volunteer in the Burn Intensive Care Unit. Through it all, Taylor navigates with a heartfelt benevolence.
