Me formé en Harvard y Princeton y fui profesor de filosofía y religión en diversas instituciones de prestigio durante 20 años antes de convertirme en editor colaborador de Psychology Today, pensador independiente, conferenciante, líder de seminarios y consultor. Soy autor de trece libros y coproductor del premiado documental de PBS «Faces of the Enemy». Mi trabajo fue el tema del especial de 60 minutos de PBS «Bill Moyers: Your Mythic Journey with Sam Keen».

Más recientemente, he coescrito un nuevo libro con mi hijo Gifford, titulado Padre pródigo, hijo descarriado.

Cuando no estoy escribiendo o viajando por el mundo dando conferencias y seminarios sobre una amplia gama de temas en los que no soy necesariamente un experto, pero sí un explorador habilidoso, me dedico a cultivar plantas en mi granja en las colinas sobre Sonoma y practico el trapecio volante.
