Mortimer J. Adler (1902-2001) fue un filósofo, educador y editor estadounidense, destacado por su labor en la promoción de la educación liberal y el estudio de los grandes clásicos de la filosofía. Obtuvo su doctorado en filosofía en la Universidad de Columbia en 1928 y enseñó jurisprudencia en la Universidad de Chicago desde 1930. Junto con Robert M. Hutchins, editó la serie Great Books of the Western World en 1952.

Entre sus obras más influyentes se encuentran Cómo leer un libro (1940), Cómo pensar sobre Dios (1980) y Seis grandes ideas (1981), todas ellas en el ámbito de la filosofía y la educación. Por su contribución al pensamiento y la educación, recibió la Medalla Nacional de Humanidades en 1976 y el Premio Charles Frankel en 1990.
