The nearly five dozen poems in the book range from the lucid, lyrical, almost mystical to the mytho-biotic, while a few are frankly political. All, however, share a common vision: a rediscovery of this land and the ways by which we might become natives of the place, ceasing to think and act (after all these centuries) as newcomers and invaders.Of particular interest is the full text of the ever more relevant Four Changes, Snyder's seminal manifesto for environmental awareness.

Gary Sherman Snyder (San Francisco, 8 de mayo de 1930) es poeta, traductor, ensayista, conferenciante y activista del medio ambiente estadounidense perteneciente al movimiento Generación Beat y el Renacimiento de San Francisco. Es considerado uno de los fundadores y precursores del movimiento contracultural de la década de 1960. Entre otros galardones, cuenta con el premio Pulitzer de poesía de 1975. Ha publicado más de 25 libros entre 1959 y 2007 (poesía, ensayo, libros de viajes) y ha sido traducido a más de 20 idiomas.
