$ 23.29Eleanor is fifty-one years old, two years widowed, and quietly running out of money.
In a moment of desperation she places an ad - four carefully chosen sentences. She tells herself she is only saving a draft.
Paul answers it.
They meet at the Millstone Café on a Tuesday in November. He is a structural engineer, fourteen months widowed, who drove over thinking he wanted one thing and arrived uncertain of what that thing was. She tells him the truth about why she is there. He doesn't make her perform receiving it. Before she gets home that evening she finds an envelope in her coat pocket. She counts the money three times because the number doesn't seem right.
It becomes a Tuesday thing.
For six months they meet at the same table with the same order while a teenage server stops asking if they need anything else. He listens the way structures bear weight - quietly, without apparent effort, holding more than you'd think. She tells him things she hasn't told anyone. He begins drawing again - house plans he had put away when his wife got sick - and he does it on fresh paper.
When she finally sees the plans she finds a slip of paper tucked inside them. Her name at the top. Five things she had said she liked, written in his small precise hand.
I didn't mean for you to see that, he says.
I know, she says.
Twenty-Three Tuesdays is a novel about grief, desire, and the specific and extraordinary courage it takes to begin again. About two people who have loved completely and lost completely, and find - one Tuesday at a time - that the heart does not require you to choose between what was and what is.
That attention, freely given and faithfully returned, is the only currency that ever counted.
