The doctrine of the believer’s union with Christ is quite possibly the central concept in Christian salvation. Much has been written about it. This book is different, as it attempts to do something unusual. Instead of explaining what the union does for people, this book is a deep dive into what the union actually is, utilizing the leading thinkers in the Reformed tradition as conversation partners. After surveying union in Reformed history, this book argues that the saving union is built upon three distinct unions Jesus makes with people. The first is his union with his creation as he is the creator God. The second is his union with humanity in the incarnation. The third is his personal assumption of the curse on all creation, taking it into himself, judging it in his death, and then raising creation up in his resurrection. These are the basis for the mutual indwelling of Christ and the believer that saves us. As this model of union is developed, the Reformed tradition remains the conversation partner along the way, and its inability to arrive at such a doctrine is explored in detail.
