Adeline Yen Mah, nacida en Tianjin, China, un 30 de noviembre de 1937, es una médica y escritora chino-americana. Dos semanas después de nacer su madre murió de fiebre puerperal y Yen Mah fue considerada un signo de mala suerte. Por ello, su familia la trató con dureza durante toda la infancia.

Tras la muerte de su madre, su padre y su madrastra se mudaron a Shanghai junto a ella y el resto de sus hermanos. Más tarde, cuando Yen Mah cumplió los once años, se trasladaron a Hong Kong. Allí ganó una competición de escritura de guiones teatrales, gracias a lo cual su padre permitió que fuera a estudiar a Inglaterra en 1952.

En Reino Unido cursó Medicina en el London Hospital Medical School, especializándose en anestesia. Su carrera médica comenzó en Estados Unidos después de haber trabajado en Hong Kong.

En lo literario, publicó en 1997 Las hojas que caen, una novela autobiográfica donde Yen Mah relata con crudeza sus experiencias familiares. El éxito que cosechó la impulsó a dejar la medicina y dedicarse por completo a la escritura. Después de su debut literario la autora ha publicado novelas y libros infantiles.

Con el fin de promover la comunicación entre Oriente y Occidente, fundó la Falling Leaves Foundation, de la que es presidenta.
