Shirley Jackson (San Francisco 1916 – Bennington 1965) estudió en la Universidad de Syracuse. En 1948 publicó su primera novela, The Road Through the Wall, y el cuento «La lotería» (incluido en el volumen Cuentos escogidos), un clásico del siglo xx. Su obra —que también incluye otras novelas, como Hangsaman (1951), The Bird’s Nest (1954) y El reloj de sol (1958), y los ensayos autobiográficos Life Among the Savages (1953) y Raising Demons (1956)— ha ejercido una gran influencia en A. M. Homes, Stephen King, Jonathan Lethem, Richard Matheson y Donna Tartt, entre otros escritores.
