Shocked and utterly distraught by news of his cousin's suicide, Grove Mathews leaves his Georgetown apartment in the middle of a 1972 summer night to drive to the family homestead in Orange, VA. Throughout the trip he is haunted with memories evoked by road signs. By the time he arrives, he has learned things about himself and his family that disgust him.
