De ascendencia latina y género no binario, Anna-Marie McLemore nació cerca de la sierra de San Gabriel, en Los Ángeles. Estudia Bellas Artes en el Vermont College of Fine Arts.

En sus obras McLemore escribe sobre sus raíces y sus vivencias personales, muy ligadas a su identidad sexual y sus orígenes latinos. En su producción se adentra, además, en el realismo mágico, usando ese pretexto para hablar sobre racismo, diversidad de género y diversidad sexual.

De su producción han llegado al mercado español títulos como Cuando la luna era nuestra (Premio James Tiptree Jr.) y Lakelore. Por su trabajo ha sido finalista de premios como el National Book Award o el William C. Morris.
