Cary, North Carolina is a vibrant community with a rich and varied history, which reflects its rural past and exciting future. As an official Town of Cary partner, the Friends of the Page-Walker is a non-profit corporation that serves as Cary’s Historical Society. The Friends of the Page-Walker advocate for preservation of Cary historic sites, archives history, and facilitates history education. Since 1991, this all-volunteer group of dedicated residents has worked tirelessly to preserve, promote, and share Cary’s history. This inaugural book extends the Friends’ mission to facilitate history education to Cary’s younger citizens. Wow A Cow! tells the true story of a young boy living in Cary during the 1930s – David Martin. Through persistence, resilience, and just plain hard work, David used his skills to help his family during a difficult period for Cary – the Depression years. It’s an inspirational story that the Friends wanted to preserve and share with elementary school age children in Cary. David Martin became an influential Cary citizen, playing critical roles in several areas, including land development, civic planning, and town leadership. This book shares a snapshot of his childhood, focusing on the clever tale of how he devised and implemented a plan to take care of his family’s milk cow, Daisy. He found an innovative solution to a challenge that might have otherwise threatened his family’s well-being. The Friends of the Page-Walker is pleased to share this inspiring story with children and families.
