John Julius Norwich (1929-2018) estudió en el New College de Oxford y, en 1952, entró en el Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, donde fue destinado a las embajadas inglesas en Belgrado y Beirut. Participó en la delegación británica de la Conferencia de Desarme de Ginebra. En 1964, abandonó su carrera diplomática para dedicarse a escribir. Fue autor de más de veinte libros sobre la historia de Europa y del Mediterráneo, y su trilogía sobre el Imperio bizantino es uno de los textos de referencia de ese período histórico. Lord Norwich fue miembro de la Royal Society of Literature, la Royal Geographical Society y la Society of Antiquaries y, en 1993, fue nombrado comendador de la Real Orden de la Reina Victoria y perteneció al Comité Ejecutivo del National Trust.
