Nacida en Lockport, Nueva York, en 1938, esta autora se ha consolidado como una de las voces más influyentes de la literatura contemporánea en Estados Unidos. Con una prolífica trayectoria que abarca más de cincuenta novelas, cientos de relatos breves, una docena de ensayos, once volúmenes de poesía y varias piezas teatrales, su obra es un testimonio del ingenio y la profundidad con la que ha explorado la condición humana.

A lo largo de su carrera, ha recibido prestigiosos galardones como el National Book Award, el PEN/Malamud Award y el Prix Fémina Étranger. En España, su inconfundible humor negro ha sido reconocido con el Premio BBK Ja! Bilbao y el Premio Pepe Carvalho 2021. Además, en 2010 fue distinguida con la National Humanities Medal, el más alto honor civil en el ámbito de las humanidades en EE.UU., y en 2012, la Oregon State University le otorgó el Premio Stone en reconocimiento a su legado literario.
