After financial and emotional ruin brought about by a combination of circumstance and hubris, Peter is left to question how to move forward with his quest for higher ideals while also realizing the hard, and in many ways fixed, realities and historical momentum of his own life. In an ending designed to allow the reader himself to learn about his own outlook on life, Sonnino leaves the reader questioning which is more powerful in the end - Mother Nature or Father Time.
