Chan nació en Hong Kong, su madre murió en el momento de su nacimiento. Cuando tenía 12 años, su padre también murió de cáncer. Obtuvo una Licenciatura en Artes de la Maestría y una Maestría en Divinidad del Seminario de Maestría. Luego trabajó brevemente como pastor de jóvenes. Francis Chan está casado con Lisa Chan es padre de siete hijos. En 1994, él y su esposa Lisa fundaron la Iglesia Comunitaria Cornerstone en Simi Valley, Condado de Ventura, California, la cual creció rápidamente. Es fundador y presidente de Eternity Bible College. Ha escrito varios libros. En 2011, Chan renunció como pastor de Cornerstone Community Church para comenzar y construir una nueva comunidad en el centro de San Francisco. Tambien es orador en eventos cristianos en los estados unidos y dicta confercnias a nivel mundial .Chan es un oponente vehemente del Prosperity Gospel, por lo tanto, no recibe salario como pastor y solo vive con una pequeña parte de lo recaudado en sus libros.
